Russian drama film "Leviathan" by Andrey Zvyagintsev

Director: Andrey Zvyagintsev
Screenwriters: Andrey Zvyagintsev, Oleg Negin

The story of Leviathan is loosely thematically based on the Biblical story of Naboth’s Vineyard and ethereally based on the Biblical story of Job.

The movie Leviathan revolves around a hotheaded simpleton named Kolya Sergeyev (Alexei Serebriakov) and the events in his life. The entire panorama of the story is based on the icy aspects of human nature as well as the fissures found in the modern social contracts. It unmasks the truth behind the casual friendliness, blind love and empty trusts. Everything comes down for Kolya, when a crooked mayor named Vadim Sergeyevich Shelevjat (Roman Madyanov) eyes for Kolya’s property and is in the process of gaining it through his legal power for a derisory sum. Meanwhile, Kolya’s family life is also in total disarray with his discontented wife Lilya (Elena Lyadova) and teenage son Roma (Sergey Pokhodaev) (from Kolya’s first marriage). Kolya is surrounded by friends, but it is because they find him useful as a skilled mechanic.
